Our Learning Journey

Kindergarten

The Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline (QKGL) provides advice for planning, interacting with children, monitoring and assessment and sharing information in kindergarten contexts. They are based on the Early Years Framework for Australia (EYLF)

The Continua of Learning and Development is a resource that helps teachers assess, reflect and make evidence-based judgements about each child’s learning progress. This information is used to plan ways to promote a continuity of learning and development. 

Foundation – Year 9

We plan, teach, assess and report on the Australian Curriculum as outlined by the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA). 

“The Australian Curriculum describes what young Australians should learn as they progress through schooling. It is the foundation for their future learning, growth and activity participation in the Australian community. It sets out the essential knowledge, skills and capabilities and provides a national standard for student achievement in core learning areas” (ACARA, 2014)

Additionally, we need to develop core employability skills as outlined by the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) including: Communication, Team Work, Problem Solving, Planning and Organisation, Technology. 

Year 10  

Year 10 is a transition year where students are taught the skills and content in order to prepare them for Years 11 and 12. In Year 10, students may choose to specialise in some subjects. They also have opportunity to complete a Certificate I in Construction in our Trade Training Centre.   

Preparing for Senior  

Before the end of Year 10, students will have agreed on a plan of study. When considering your Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan, students need to consider their abilities, interest and ambitions. If they do not know what they want to do (and that is OK), they need to consider how to keep their options open.  

  • What are my career goals? 
  • Which subjects am I good at? 
  • Which subjects do I like? 
  • Do I want to continue studying after Year 12? 
  • Which subjects, if any, are pre-requisites?  

Years 11 –12  

In Years 11-12 students begin working towards the ‘Queensland Certificate of Education’. Subjects are informed by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA).  

We offer both academic and vocational pathways. For those looking towards further study in university, students have opportunity to study a wide range of subjects that will contribute to their ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank). Students also have opportunity to study in our Trade Training Centre and complete Certificates in a range of VET course.

About General Subjects 

General subjects are suited to students who are interested in pathways beyond senior secondary schooling that lead to tertiary studies and to pathways for vocational education and training (VET) and work. Results in General subjects contribute to the award of the QCE and may contribute to an ATAR. 

About Applied Subjects 

Applied subjects are suited to students who are primarily interested in pathways beyond senior Secondary schooling that will lead to vocational education and training (VET) or work. Results in Applied subjects contribute to the award of a QCE and one Applied subject result may contribute to an ATAR. 

About Vocational Education Training (VET) 

The delivery of all VET subjects are bound by the Australian Quality Training Framework (2007), and are supported by our own Registered Training Organisation (RTO) or TAFE. These subjects provide opportunities to gain QCE Credits. 

  • Certificate I Courses  provide 2-3 QCE credits 
  • Certificate II Courses can provide 4 QCE credits  
  • Certificate III Courses provide up to 8 QCE credits.  

About Short Courses  

Short Courses are one-unit courses of study that are suited to students who are interested in pathways beyond school that lead to vocational education and training (VET) or work. Each Short Course may contribute to one credit towards a QCE. They do not contribute to ATAR Calculations.  

At our College, students may be able to complete a short course in Literacy and/or Numeracy to help achieve their QCE.
